MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation Review

Welcome to another post, Beauties! Today I wanted to put my two cents in regarding the MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation. I’ve been using this for about a month, I like to give a good amount of time to review a product before I say yay or nay. I’d rather be late to the party than give a first impressions review. And yes I know, this foundation has been around for the longest time, so it’s only probably new to me.

First up, this was a gift from my Mum so I didn’t break my no buy. When we went away for our girls trip we discovered a MAC counter at the airport. I’d been wanting to get shade matched for ages, as did my sister, so off we went. After discussing what kind of finish I prefer, my skin type, coverage and a bunch of other things I was recommended the Studio Sculpt Foundation. My shade is NW20 and my sister is NC20. One thing that baffles me about MAC is that I have cool undertones but have NW and my sister has warm undertones and is NC. In every other brand I’ve encountered W usually indicates warm and C, cool. But I digress.

I really liked the finish of the foundation but since I was on a no buy and had perfectly good foundation to be used, I filed away my shade match and thought I’d buy it come June. My sister was purchasing her foundation and Mum also got shade matched. Next thing I know they’re ringing up all 3 foundations and Mum was handing over her card. I thanked her profusely, it was a lovely unexpected gift.

The shade itself is PERFECT. I have never used a foundation that I haven’t had to blend down my neck or warm up with bronzer. This one, however, is absolutely amazing. The foundation itself comes in a squeeze tube, which I like because I’m all about using every last drop. If I had my way all foundations would come in either a squeeze tube or an airless pump. You get 40mL for $54 AUD which is pretty standard for a higher end foundation. It also has SPF 15 in it. Not the highest on the market but better than nothing. I haven’t had the opportunity to photograph it with flash to see if there’s flashback but I’ll endeavour to do so before this post goes live.

The foundation is Gel based and has a mousse like consistency, thicker than my Artistry foundation and my L’Oréal foundation but not as thick as a mud mask. For me, personally, it dries at that perfect in between of matte and dewy. I was advised at the counter that I wouldn’t need to set this if I didn’t want to. As it’s still summer (technically autumn but you wouldn’t know with 30°C days) I still choose to set it with a powder but I can already tell that in winter I won’t have to do that, especially if my skin isn’t handling the cold that well. Once it’s dried I can touch my face without having that foundation-y feel on my finger tips and it has very little transfer. I adore the finish of this foundation. It’s the kind of foundation that’s like my skin but better.

It also has great coverage. It isn’t full coverage, I’ll be honest, but for the blemishes I like to cover and the coverage I enjoy, I love it. I can still see my skin without the imperfections, if that makes any sense at all. Although, I only use about a pea sized amount, which I can use for my entire face and get the coverage I like, perhaps if I used a little more and built it up it could be full coverage. Powders and cream products blend great over it, I really enjoy it. Even setting it with a powder doesn’t make me look cakey or dry. The other thing I love about it is that even though it’s slightly matte it doesn’t emphasise my wrinkles or fine lines. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on my makeup and skin when I’ve been wearing this foundation.

Overall, this is my new high end foundation of choice. Once my Artistry one runs out I will not be repurchasing it, but I will be this one. I’m really looking forward to winter (not only for the temperature relief) but to see how this foundation works. I feel like in comparison I spent much of last winter looking slightly cakey/drier than I will this winter (hopefully). I’ll keep you updated!

Have any of you tried this or another MAC foundation? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time, Beauties xx
